Settling to Learn

These key notes are taken from a talk by Margot Sunderland, a British child psychologist and psychotherapist. She is Director of Education and Training at the Centre for Child Mental Health. It backs up the need to build secure attachments and positive relationships between adults and students with scientific reasoning, outlining the state of hyper arousal students get into, particularly when they have experienced trauma. It goes through the stages of breaking down barriers and building secure attachments, the journey from trust to mistrust.

It helps explain some of the behaviours of our most vulnerable students. It’s well worth a read and the science (not trauma related) bits may be useful to share with students. It would help them recognise that the anxiety they demonstrate is a physiological reaction that prevents them from learning.
