I’ve come across this really interesting TED talk from Dr Lara Boyd about brain plasticity. It talks a lot about strokes and health but there are many parallels with education which I feel link to our teaching and learning group.
It is 15 minutes long (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNHBMFCzznE) but here are some key points.
- ‘Nothing is more effective than practice in helping you learn’
- There’s no one size fits all for learning- practice length varies so personalised learning is key.
- ‘Increased difficulty and increased struggle in practice actually leads to both more learning and greater structural change in the brain’
- Neuro plasticity can be positive and negative so the brain changes by everything you do and everything you don’t do.
- ‘Behaviours that you employ in everyday life are important, each of them is changing your brain’
- The uniqueness of your brain affects both learners and teachers.
