Metacognition & Cognitive Load Theory

Metacognition is about how students think about and monitor their learning. A successful self-regulated learner will be able to look at a problem, choose the appropriate strategies to tackle it and then reflect and evaluate their success. It is, however, impossible to be metacognitive without having the necessary cognitive strategies to hand or the emotional resilience, motivation and determination to succeed.
In order to improve student performance and to help them acquire the cognitive strategies needed, we must be mindful that there is a limit to how much new information the human brain can process. If a student's working memory is overloaded, there is a greater risk of the content not being retained and, as a result, learning is slowed down.
