Challenge

T&L Focus: Challenge

As teachers, we need to ensure that the work that we provide causes students to think deeply and that it engages them in healthy struggle. We need to help students to shift their mindset to a position where they understand that through hard-work, resilience and determination they will succeed! Our role in this is to be responsive and to support and scaffold so that all students meet our expectations.

Some strategies to try:

  • Have a simple and challenging learning objective (consider using Bloom's Taxonomy).
  • At KS3, dip-into GCSE concepts. At GCSE, dip-into A-Level concepts.
  • Know your stuff! Read subject specific journals, look at websites and research papers, read books....!
  • Share excellence. Do students know what standard they are aiming for? Have you shared examples of excellent work with them?
  • Use language to communicate your expectations (the power of the word 'yet', if it's not excellent it's not finished, working harder makes you smarter, keep thinking - i'll come back to you in 5mins, there is no such thing as clever, I know you can do it because I remember when..., if you're not struggling you're not learning...)
